Michael McPherson in China

I have personally been to China to inspect not only the manufacturing facilities, but also the forest from which the bamboo is harvested. I had to satisfy myself that not only was the product of consistently superior quality, but that the source from which it came was not adversely affecting the environment. My trip pleasantly reassured me that there was no clear cutting going on, and it amazed me that each individual bamboo stalk had been dated for proper harvesting. Each stalk all of which were probably 40 feet high had it's own date and yet none of the dated were similar to it's neighbors. This allows the farmers to maintain the environmental integrity of the forest, while controlling the proper maturing and harvesting of the bamboo. This cycle repeats itself less than five years.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System© is a voluntary, consensus-based nationally standardized program for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. It is sponsored by the US Green Building Council. The following are the standards that are currently available or will be available soon by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED):
New commercial construction and major renovation projects

LEED was created to:
Define “green building” by establishing a common standard or measurement
Promote integrated, whole-building design practices
Recognize environmental leadership in the building industry
Stimulate green competition
Raise consumer awareness of green building benefits
Transform the building market
LEED Green Building Rating System provides the framework for design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. With solid standards in scientific background, LEED emphasizes on the five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. The LEED program includes training workshops and a professional accreditation program to promote and emphasize green building expertise across the building industry.
